Tarot Tuesday: Tarot of the Witch’s Garden Review

Tarot Tuesday: Tarot of the Witch’s Garden Review

Welcome to Tarot Tuesday!! This week I am very excited to be talking about a new tarot deck that was sent to me by Llewellyn to review. I was looking forward to this deck so much and it did not disappoint! Do you have a favorite tarot deck style that you lean toward? Maybe more abstract or earthy? I tend to lean toward decks that are more earthy in nature. If you know me, that make complete sense…I am the prime example of a Capricorn after all.

That being said, let’s jump right in shall we?

When beginning a review of a tarot deck, the first thing I always look at is the box and presentation. As with many Llewellyn decks, this one comes in a sturdy box with a magnetic closure. There is a ribbon attached inside the box so that the cards are more easily removed and the book sits right on top of the cards. This is very typical, nothing surprising here.

After opening the box, we come to the guidebook. I do want to mention that just as with the Forest of Enchantment tarot, this guidebook has a different title than the deck itself. The deck is Tarot of the Witch’s Garden but the guidebook is labeled Secrets of the Witch’s Garden. This can be confusing for some and they end up referring to the deck incorrectly.  I do really love how Llewellyn makes their guidebooks though! The pages are made of thick, high quality paper and filled with bright, vivid images. The best part is that typically we find the beginning of the book very educational about what to do prior to using your deck. Many times it talks about cleansing the deck, basic layouts for tarot pulls, etc. I loved this book more than others but that was simply because each card had the astrological sign clear on each page as well as a short poem. Sasha did an amazing job going into the details of what each symbol on each card was representative of.

As with most Sasha Graham decks, I love these cards!! The first thing I noticed was the linen card stock. I am unsure why but there is something comforting about the linen printed cards. Natasa Ilincic did a fantastic job with the artwork in this deck. The images are clear and vibrant. Sasha did follow the typical RWS system of symbols and meanings so this deck would even be a fantastic beginner deck to learn from.

There is a misprint in the cards, the Justice card and Wheel of Fortune cards have the associated numbers mixed up. From what I have heard online it is a misprint and will be fixed in the following printings. I understand some people are really upset about that and rated this deck one star, but from my point of view I see it as a value. Typically, misprints in decks make them more valuable as long as there are not too many of them. Being a first edition, this may become worth more than the market value in the future.

There is one card that I always have to look at in every deck…nine of swords. I actually really enjoy this representation of the card. The woman is sleeping in her hammock and seems to be surrounded by things of nightmares…but are they really there? Will they be there when she wakes? The one thing I did find missing in this card compared to traditional RWS cards are the zodiac symbols that usually appear on the quilted blanket. Since there is no blanket, the symbols do not seem to be present.

Seven of cups is a card that I absolutely fell in love with. It appears to be a very straight forward card and that is not what I love. In fact, the description in the book is what pulled me in! Sasha actually goes into detail about the symbolism of each of the cups. I think that is the first time that I have ever seen that done and it really does make such an impact on interpretations that could come up in a reading.

I took a few images of some of the cards but wanted to add so many more…maybe I will add to this slideshow in the coming days. Let me know what you think of this deck and the imagery by commenting below. Would this be a deck you would see yourself using for readings? Personal ones or only ones for others?

This is a great deck for beginners and experts alike. With vivid colors and images that have deep hidden symbols, this is bound to expand your knowledge as you learn or continue to grow in your tarot practice. I know this is going to quickly become my new favorite deck. There is such a deep grounded energy to the cards that I really connect with.
