June 2023 Releases

Welcome back to The Bibliophagist! Today I wanted to take a look at a few releases that are coming in June that I am looking forward to or that generally sound interesting. According to Goodreads, there are a total of 56 books being released. I am going to highlight the ones on that list that I think would be interesting reads. If you want to take a look at the list, you can find the link here.

The first book that I am looking forward to is actually this author’s debut novel! With no reviews on Amazon and 3.95 stars on Goodreads, the first novel is bound to be an exciting one.

Shanghai Immortal: A richly told debut fantasy novel set in Jazz Age Shanghai by [A. Y. Chao]Shanghai Immortal

Author: AY Chao

Expected Release Date: June 1st, 2023

Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton

Buy the book: Amazon, Barnes and Noble

This richly told adult fantasy debut teems with Chinese deities and demons cavorting in jazz age Shanghai.

Pawned by her mother to the King of Hell as a child, Lady Jing is half-vampire, half-hulijing fox-spirit and all sasshole. As the King’s ward, she has spent the past ninety years running errands, dodging the taunts of the spiteful hulijing courtiers, and trying to control her explosive temper – with varying levels of success.

So when Jing overhears the courtiers plotting to steal a priceless dragon pearl from the King, she seizes her chance to expose them, once and for all.

With the help of a gentle mortal tasked with setting up the Central Bank of Hell, Jing embarks on a wild chase for intel, first through Hell and then mortal Shanghai. But when her hijinks put the mortal in danger, she must decide which is more important: avenging her loss of face, or letting go of her half-empty approach to life for a chance to experience tenderness – and maybe even love.

What do you think?! I think it has potential and with the reviews so far giving an average of 3.95, I think there is a good chance this will be a good read.

The next book is all about the murder or a magical history professor and a school of young magicians helping to solve this thrilling case.

The Grimoire of Grave Fates

Author: This book actually has many contributors but the two editors are Hanna Alkaf and Margaret Owen

Expected Publication Date: June 6th, 2023

Publisher: Delacorte Press

Buy the book: Amazon, Barnes and Noble

Crack open your spell book and enter the world of the illustrious Galileo Academy for the Extraordinary. There’s been a murder on campus, and it’s up to the students of Galileo to solve it. Follow 18 authors and 18 students as they puzzle out the clues and find the guilty party.

Professor of Magical History Septimius Dropwort has just been murdered, and now everyone at the Galileo Academy for the Extraordinary is a suspect.

A prestigious school for young magicians, the Galileo Academy has recently undergone a comprehensive overhaul, reinventing itself as a roaming academy in which students of all cultures and identities are celebrated. In this new Galileo, every pupil is welcome–but there are some who aren’t so happy with the recent changes. That includes everyone’s least favorite professor, Septimius Dropwort, a stodgy old man known for his harsh rules and harsher punishments. But when the professor’s body is discovered on school grounds with a mysterious note clenched in his lifeless hand, the Academy’s students must solve the murder themselves, because everyone’s a suspect.

Told from more than a dozen alternating and diverse perspectives, The Grimoire of Grave Fates follows Galileo’s best and brightest young magicians as they race to discover the truth behind Dropwort’s mysterious death. Each one of them is confident that only they have the skills needed to unravel the web of secrets hidden within Galileo’s halls. But they’re about to discover that even for straight-A students, magic doesn’t always play by the rules. . . .

Contributors include: Cam Montgomery, Darcie Little Badger, Hafsah Faizal, Jessica Lewis, Julian Winters, Karuna Riazi, Kat Cho, Kayla Whaley, Kwame Mbalia, L. L. McKinney, Marieke Nijkamp, Mason Deaver, Natasha Diaz, Preeti Chhibber, Randy Ribay, Tehlor Kay Mejia, Victoria Lee, and Yamile Saied Mendez

Now…if you know me, you know I am a sucker for anything magickal and I have always been a sucker for a good thriller or mystery novel. This sounds like one right up my alley. On Goodreads it has an average of 3.68 stars with no reviews on Amazon as of yet. I think I will for sure be picking this one up.

The next book is yet based on a Hindu philosophy but with a science fiction twist. With an average of a 4.30 rating on Goodreads, this really does look like a great read.

The Surviving Sky by [Kritika H. Rao]The Surviving Sky (Rage #1)

Author: Kritika H. Rao

Expected Release Date: June 13th, 2023

Publisher: Titan Books

Buy the book: Amazon, Barnes and Noble

This Hindu philosophy-inspired debut science fantasy follows a husband and wife racing to save their living city—and their troubled marriage—high above a jungle world besieged by cataclysmic storms.

High above a jungle-planet float the last refuges of humanity—plant-made civilizations held together by tradition, technology, and arcane science. In these living cities, architects are revered above anyone else. If not for their ability to psychically manipulate the architecture, the cities would plunge into the devastating earthrage storms below.

Charismatic, powerful, mystical, Iravan is one such architect. In his city, his word is nearly law. His abilities are his identity, but to Ahilya, his wife, they are a way for survival to be reliant on the privileged few. Like most others, she cannot manipulate the plants. And she desperately seeks change.

Their marriage is already thorny—then Iravan is accused of pushing his abilities to forbidden limits. He needs Ahilya to help clear his name; she needs him to tip the balance of rule in their society. As their paths become increasingly intertwined, deadly truths emerge, challenging everything each of them believes. And as the earthrages become longer, and their floating city begins to plummet, Iravan and Ahilya’s discoveries might destroy their marriage, their culture, and their entire civilization.

I think I will really like this one. Living cities of plants…now that sounds like something I can get behind. A life where you have to live above the forest because of storms. This sounds similar to something I have read or watched in the past but I can’t place my finger on it. That being said…there is currently a giveaway for this title on Goodreads, be sure to enter for a chance to win a copy!

This next title had me at dragon…need not say more!

Hearts Forged in Dragon Fire by [Erica Hollis]Hearts Forged in Dragon Fire

Author: Erica Hollis

Expected Release Date: June 5th, 2023

Publisher: Entangled: TEEN

Buy the book: Amazon, Barnes and Noble

For fans of Abigail Owen and Samantha Shannon comes a breathtaking, energetic novel where the only way to defeat a dragon is to outsmart it…

Most dragontongues don’t live long enough to learn from their mistakes. Lotte Meer is luckier than most, surviving long enough to communicate with the fierce, sullen, and temperamental dragons who are not above enjoying a human as a light snack. And she has the scars to prove it.

Now a massive, foul-tempered dragon has taken over the town of Morwassen’s Pass, taking the citizens hostage. As long as they bring him their gold and treasure, he won’t reduce their city to a smoking heap of ash and death. Only, the treasure is running out and Lotte—with the help of sharp-tongued, unbelievably cute Maryse Basvaan—is their last and only hope.

But this dragon is more cunning—and more cruel—than any other. Not only is he holding Lotte’s estranged mom captive, but he has a taste for betrayal…and somehow he’s stricken some kind of secret deal with the girl who’s already gone and stolen Lotte’s heart.

Lotte won’t fail. She can’t.

Because if she does…everyone dies.

There you have it…the few books from the Goodreads Coming June 2023 list that I think I may enjoy. There are a few others but these are what stood out to me for sure.
