The Dysasters – P.C. Cast

The Dysasters – P.C. Cast

Happy Thursday everyone! We are one day closer to a weekend and thank goodness some warmer weather. I am tired of the cold and snow, I want to be able to read outside in the shade, or by the pool.

I even have my new Kindle now, the new waterproof Kindle Paperwhite! Now I don’t have to fear if my kids drip on me while asking me to get more pool toys out for them. You won’t see me jumping into the pool with it in my hand but it makes me feel just a bit safer, knowing it will survive a child tsunami (splashes and squirt guns) if one comes my way.

What are you looking forward to most this summer? I think for me it is Bookcon! I am actually going to be in NYC for a total of four days. So if you have any idea on what I should do while there, by all means, let me know in the comments below. My husband and I are open to hearing some suggestions for fun things to do during our stay.

Today I am talking about The Dysasters by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. I was actually a part of the blog tour for this book but I chose to do a promo post rather than a review at that time. I told you all that I would be doing a review soon and here I am…so let’s get to it.

Foster Stewart knows she’s different. Her life has never been “normal.” Talking to plants and controlling cloud formations aren’t things most seventeen year olds are into. Tate “Nighthawk” Taylor is perfect. Star quarterback and all around dreamy boy next door he never thought about his “extra” abilities. What quarterback wouldn’t want night vision? That’s not weird, right? It’s cool!
But on the night of their first meeting, a deadly tornado brings them together and awakens their true abilities – the power to control the element air. Unbeknown to Tate and Foster, they are the first in a group of teens that were genetically manipulated before birth to bond with the elements. Which truly sucks for Foster, as she has to face the fact that Dr. Rick Stewart, her beloved scientist father, betrayed her and now wants to use her and the others for his own nefarious world domination plot.
Foster and Tate must stop Dr. Stewart and his minions before he destroys their lives and the world.

I knew I had to read this when I was asked about taking part in the blog tour. If you were not already aware, this mother/daughter duo are the authors behind the House of Night series, which I love by the way. When I learned they were beginning a new series, I just had to get my hands on a copy it. Needless to say, I was excited when I learned I was going to be a part of the tour and have a copy of the book to review at a date of my choosing.

The concept of the book was what really pulled me into the story. A group of teenagers, genetically modified to have elemental powers? Who wouldn’t want to pick this up and read it…exactly! I did enjoy the book but had a few issues as I progressed. The writing was the first noticeable issue, sometimes it felt as if the story was being rushed. The reader is thrown into a chaotic story-line and forced to run through the book basically. Much of the story is dialogue rather than narration. This lead to some awkward writing that honestly felt really cheesy occasionally.
One thing I really loved though was the transgendered representation in the book. We also see the reaction of a character’s parents to their trans identity. This aspect of identifying as trans, or anything other than hetero really, is something we often hear about but never see in fiction. This adds to the tension in part of the story. There were many points of high tension but they were broken with humor, giving the story a nice balance.
As the writing felt rushed, the book did have a fast-paced feel, but I think there were moments where the pace slowed a little. This was a nice break and actually, these moments were when you really learn more about the characters and their backgrounds.

There was not a lot to be done here, the story seems to take place in our present times. There was some background information about how these teens came to have their elemental powers and who was responsible. I found that both interesting as well as disturbing. I was furious when I found where that scientist had gotten the eggs. What he did was wrong on so many levels. I think I need to read the second book just to see if he gets what he deserves or if there is more background information the reader has yet to learn.

I had a hard time connecting to any of these characters on a deeper level. I didn’t really enjoy them until near the end of the story. I did find that I connect a little with Cora in the beginning, calling Foster her baby although she was now 18. I like to think that my boys will always be my babies, no matter how old they become. I think that is why I related more to Cora than anyone else, being a mother is a special bond.

Foster: She is she is a hard-headed, independent 18-year-old girl. I feel as if I just couldn’t connect to her enough to really be invested in her story. She started off seemingly snobbish and stuck up, a typical teenage girl who thinks she should get her way. I don’t think that is how she was intended

Tate: The typical high school football jock, except he isn’t typical. He brings humor to the tensest situations. All in all, he was a good character but I failed to connect with him as well. He started to grow on me by the end of the book.

Overall, this was not a bad book but it was written in a more juvenile way than I had anticipated. I think those on the younger end of the YA spectrum would enjoy this more than myself, who is 28. It was nice to read a story with a change of pace from the typical fantasy novel. This had some great superhero type feels to it and I don’t read things like this often. The premise of the book is unique among books of this genre. I think one of my favorite parts of this book was the illustrations.  This really brought the characters to life, tornadoes and all. Although I did not feel connected to the characters and the writing felt rushed and very cheesy at times, I think I would read the second book. I enjoyed the premise of the story and I want to see where the authors take this.

Would you read this novel? Buy it or borrow it? If you have read it, what did you think?

Great review, I’m not sure it’s for me – I don’t tend to read much YA nowadays.

I’m so jealous of your NYC trip 😀 😀 😀

I’ve heard of this book and author, but haven’t read any of them yet. I do enjoy fantasy, so this might be anew author for me to try. Have fun in NY! I need a waterproof Kindle for reading outside and by the pool. I can’t take my books or kindle to our sub pool for fear of water damage.

I read their House of Night series when I was younger and fell in love with it!

The waterproof kindle puts my mind at ease a littl for sure! Especially having kids…
