Blog Tour: Shattered Honor – Anne Wheeler

Today I am really happy to have the honor of participating in a blog tour for Shattered Honor by Anne Wheeler! This is the third book in her Shadow of War series and it is sooo good. I was really happy when she asked if I would participate in her tour. I’ve loved her books since I opened to the first chapter of the first book.

Well now that you all know how excited I am…let’s get started! Be sure to stick around because there is a nice treat at the end…no that does not mean scroll down to the end, just be patient. Ok, so…about the book:

Gareth Chase might be a model Haederan officer, but even his unshakable loyalty to his emperor can’t assuage his constant misgivings. Certain his past deeds have destined him to a hellish afterlife, he’s not happy to be ordered to his empire’s newly conquered planet of Asria to keep watch on their princess. He’s even less thrilled to find that his new charge is insolent, reckless, and defiant—and almost certainly an enemy spy.
Katryn Holt is also headed for Asria—as a hostage. But hostages aren’t usually treated like this, are they? She’s got her own cabin on the long-range starship, pleasant company—even if he is Haederan—and black-market Commonwealth coffee. But as she wrestles with her strange attraction to Rhys Linden, one thought remains—how will things change once they reach their destination?
Torn between his obligations and conscience, Chase will fight his imperial duty, no matter the cost. Trapped between her brother’s mistakes and her own emotions, Katryn will fight for what seems to be a hopeless escape. But by the time the two finally meet on this foreign, war-torn planet, setting things right again may be impossible.
Shattered Honor shows the events of Asrian Skies from the view of the conquerors . . . who aren’t always the winners.

You are all now as excited as I am right? Now…stop right there. If you have not read the first two books in the series, go do that first. This is a part of a series and though you might be able to read this first…it will make much more sense if you read it after the first two.

Something I really love about this series are the eye-catching covers! Just look at them…

Asrian Skies (Shadows of War, #1)    Unbroken Fire (Shadows of War, #2)    Shattered Honor (Shadows of War Book 3)

What did I tell you? Are these gorgeous or what? These are for sure one set of books that would catch my eye as I walked down the isles of a bookstore. You can find reviews for Asrian Skies as well as Unbroken Fire – Anne Wheeler by clicking the titles mentioned in this sentence. If you’ve read these books, leave your review links in the comments. I would love to read your thoughts!

Shattered honor follows the storyline of Asrian Skies until Unbroken Fire but from a different perspective. This time around, we see the story from the POV of “enemies.” I use that term loosely because if you read this you will find it brings up a lot of questions. It forces you to see both sides of the story and determine who is really an enemy or a hero in their own story. Someone you might think of as an antagonist one moment might actually be fighting for something that has more meaning than just controlling a new planet.

As with her other novels, Anne weaves an intricate plot with so many unpredictable twists and turns that it keeps you guessing and you hate to put it down. The pace might seem a little slow at times but if you have the time to just sit and read it, this one will surely pull you in.

Anne’s characters are probably the best part of every book I’ve read of hers. I feel the story is character driven and not by ‘strong’ characters or anything typical. She manages to create amazing characters that are so deeply thought out that I can imagine them being real. Characters that I find intriguing and want to know more about.

In the first two books, Chase was that character. I wanted more of him, to know what made him smile and what made him angry. Anne must have read my mind because this is that book! Avery plays a much smaller role but we see her from the perspective of Chase, her captor. It is entirely different from her previous books but just as good! We really get to see the motives that drive him and I love his little bits of humor. He really is one of my favorite characters. If anyone else still thinks Chase and Avery belong together…just no. I still love him though. He never gives into anger to stoops to a lower level, despite how difficult his life may get. He is a strong-willed and caring man, simply misunderstood in the first books. I sensed that from the start and could not be happier that we see his POV in this story.

Each character in this story is flawed which makes them so relatable and realistic. Speaking of, Kat is such an admirable person. I love that she is determined to survive and struggles between saving her brother and falling for her own captor. We see her struggle and I really like that the relationship is put aside but you still see that emotion between them. It enforces that not all romantic endings are happy and that is a part of life, it’s alright. Kat values family and the bond it comes with, even after being shocked and feeling betrayed by her own brother she still puts her life on the line to save him.

Since this is a part of a series and the world doesn’t change much…there is not a large amount of new world building information. The detailed descriptors used within the pages are once again, stunning. I can see the events unfolding before me, putting me beside Chase as he makes the difficult decisions, next to Kat as she falls in love or feels betrayed.

Recreating a novel from a different perspective can be challenging but Anne nailed it! Too often I have run into books that retell a story from the POV of another character and too much of the book is almost copied and pasted from previous books...(Grey I am talking to you…the copied and pasted versions of fifty shades…) Here, she was able to bring so many more details and plot lines we didn’t see int he other books. We truly get a look behind the curtain so to speak.

You will not regret picking up this series, especially if you love space-based novels that will make you hate, cry, laugh…these will play with your emotions and they might not always be gentle.
