Welcome back to The Bibliophagist! We have a special treat for you all today!! Today is the first ever Mother & Son Book review here on my blog. Before we begin, let me explain how my son (7-year-old Liam) and I came up with the idea.
So, there I was, writing a book review as is typical for me. My older son came over and asked if I was working on my book, to which I told him no. He was curious so I showed him what I was doing. I told him about what a book review consists of and why it is important to authors and readers alike. Looking at me, questions swimming in his younger blue eyes, he replied… “Do you review kids books?” I told him that I had not and he lit up with joy. Liam asked if he could review some of the books he reads on my blog. That is when I decided that we could use the books we read together and review them using what we each thought. He becomes really critical when thinking of how to review a book, it’s funny to see.
There you have it, that is how Mother & Son Reviews came to be. I hope that you all enjoy our review and we look forward to sharing more of our thoughts with you for future books we read together.

Find out if their skill at riding orgo will help Fayth and her friends succeed!
To begin, we looked at the cover to try to get a feel for the book. Here is what we thought:
My Son’s Thoughts: The Orgo looks like a fuzzy chicken running in the snow. I’d like to ride one and have one as a pet.
My Thoughts: I really love the new covers, they match so nicely and the simplicity of them is beautiful. I enjoy the ombre effect in the background and how the Orgo is running in what looks like snow. Everything on the cover is clearly read and eye-catching.
Now, let’s get more into the actual story. We both really enjoyed it overall and we are looking forward to reading the rest of the series!
My Son’s Thoughts: I liked the Orgo most in this book. There was a lot of action, and I asked my mom to keep reading after the one part because I wanted to know what happened next. The pictures were nice to see but I wish they were in color and bigger. The people all worked together to help each other when they needed it. It was a good book and I am excited to read the next one and see what happens next to the Orgo.
My Thoughts: I think what I liked most about this story was how the characters banned together. Although one person was the reason they were doing this run with their Orgos, they stuck together and worked as a team to solve the issue at hand. Teamwork and not leaving others behind is a big theme here among these characters, even the Orgo are treated like family. I really enjoyed how there were both male and female characters and they are equally strong. Well, maybe… I thought the female character came off a little more strong than the male ones but that is just my opinion. My son did not care, either way, he only cares that things turned out alright for the Orgo at the end.
The imagery used was great but since this is a novel intended for older children, maybe middle-grade readers, it was nice to have a few images thrown in now and then. While we were reading my son insisted we stopped and looked at all the details in the pictures. Based on the descriptions given, we were able to tell who the characters were in each image.
The plot was interesting enough to keep my seven-year-old engaged and wondering what would happen next. I thought that it was a little predictable but I’ve read many books where readers in the target age range would not have. The Orgo were one of the best parts but my son also loved the little robot because I read those lines in a robotic voice. He laughed every time. The world, in general, was very well thought out and I was happy with how the author provided just enough information for us to have an idea of what the world dynamics were like.
Overall, it was a fantastic story that we both enjoyed reading. It was easy enough where he could read on his own, only needed help with a few pronunciations or larger words. The First Run is a great introduction to a series that I hope we grow to love as a family. I think the next book will be even better than this one so, watch for our review of that one in the future.
P.S. There are plushies of the Orgo available for purchase from the author and my son now wants to own all of them! To be honest, I kind of want them too, they look like giant fluffy chickens, I love the gray one most I think.
There you have it, our short review of Orgo Runners: The First Run. If your child likes fast-paced books, action, likable characters, and cute animals…this would be a great novel to start them on reading higher level books.
Would you read this novel with your child or buy it for them? Have you read this or any books by R.J. Furness? What did you think? What children’s books would you like to see here as Mother & Son reviews? We are a very busy family but love finding time to read together. I hope that you all enjoyed our first Mother & Son Review. Our hope with these reviews is that readers can get feedback from someone in that book’s target age group as well as parental feedback.
