Blog Tour – First Chapter Review: After the Green Withered – Kristin Ward

Hello again, seems like just yesterday you were here reading a different blog tour post…oh wait, you were. I told you that I had a lot of reviews to do this week, I wasn’t kidding. Three blog tours in a row…man oh man you are all in for yet another treat. This one is the first blog tour by TheWriterReads Ultimate Blog Tours. This tour company is fantastic. They began as a support group for bloggers and continue to do amazing work within the community. Each day there is a featured post and a featured review. The aim is to help bloggers grow and create a supportive community where we can all connect.

I help with the blog tours and I can tell you that they are going very well. The aim for the first tour was to have it last ten days with ten blog posts or reviews on each day. That means a total of 100 reviews or blog posts, fantastic exposure for the author. In the future we hope to possibly increase the number of blog posts each day, giving the author and their book the maximum amount of exposure for the tour.

The first tour began April 1st and will continue until April 10th. Today is only day five so be sure to visit TheWriteReads via Twitter to find the other posts.

Today I am bringing to you something akin to First Look Friday. I read the first chapter of After the Green Withered and will give you my feedback on that. Before we get to it, let’s learn about the book and author.

Disclaimer: I received an ecopy of this from the author in exchange for my honest opinions. That in no way impacts my review.

They tell me the country looked different back then.
They talk of open borders and flowing rivers.
They say the world was green.
But drought swept across the globe and the United States of the past disappeared under a burning sky.
Enora Byrnes lives in the aftermath, a barren world where water has become the global currency. In a life dominated by duty to family and community, Enora is offered a role within an entity that controls everything from water credits to borders. But it becomes clear that not all is as it seems. From the wasted confines of her small town to the bowels of a hidden city, Enora will uncover buried secrets that hide an unthinkable reality.
As truth reveals the brutal face of what she has become, she must ask herself: how far will she go to retain her humanity?

From the cover, we can tell this story is going to be a sad one. The world is desolated, dry and withered, no green in sight. The image of the girl on the left makes me think that she will contemplate what happened in the past and how they can move forward from where they are now. It really brings the message that this will be a book filled with loss and for some reason I am really thirsty all of a sudden.

About the Author

Kristin Ward has loved writing since middle school but took thirty years to do something serious about it. The result is her Best Indie Book Award-winning novel, After the Green Withered, followed by the sequel, Burden of Truth. She lives in a small town in Connecticut with her husband, three sons, and many furry and feathered friends. A SciFi geek to the core, she is fueled by dark chocolate and coffee and can be heard quoting eighties movies on a regular basis.

Review

I knew this was going to be a good book just from the prologue and first chapter. The writing style is addictive, I was only meant to read the first chapter but I didn’t want to stop reading, it was addictive. What I liked the most is how realistic this story could be. I’m not going to get political but I don’t completely agree with the ideas some propose as solutions, I don’t think we should stop the progress altogether. This is a terrifyingly real possibility if we stopped all efforts to find a way to preserve the resources we often take for granted, such as water.

Already, the book has the feeling of George Orwell’s 1984, the DMC (Drought Mitigation Corporation). In this story, every citizen has a microchip embedded in their left wrist. This chip is used to monitor everything from riding the bus or arriving at school to buying food or water. It seems like there is a new “Big Brother” in town and it is DMC. This is going to be a great book and you for sure don’t want to miss it. Grab your copy today. Start this incredible series and remember to recycle.
