Book Box Reviews and Comparisons

Book Box Reviews and Comparisons

If you are a book blogger, chances are that you have heard of or even subscribed to at least one book box. There is an endless list of book boxes to choose from, one for each type of book lover. When looking to buy your first one, the choices can be daunting! I know I looked and had no idea where to begin.

That…is why I am here. I have chosen a few book boxes to review for you all so that you can get a feel of what they have to offer. This might become a more regular feature on my blog as I begin reviewing more of these. So far, I have received three different boxes which you will see reviewed below. I will list the cost along with each item that came in the box and my overall thoughts. If there is a book box that you have heard of and would like to see reviewed, just comment below and let me know. I will see what I can do to get one and review it.

Litjoy Crate

I had heard wonderful things about this box and seen some great unboxing photos, so I decided to give it a shot. It did arrive quickly. This was the first book box that I had ever received and I do have to say that this box was a disappointment when compared to what my expectations were. I did not keep most of the items, they just were not something I would have used. The box was bright and unmistakable and I did enjoy the wording on the inside of the box. Everything was packaged nicely. This box was $29.99, not including shipping. For the money, I guess it was worth it but I felt let down, unsure if I wanted to risk purchasing this box again.

Lunar Chronical Cards

These were really cool but I had just started the series. I did trade them, but I enjoyed these and they were one of the best parts of this box.

Bookmark

Who doesn’t love bookmarks? I did end up keeping this. I love the design as well as the quote so this one was another win.

Coin Purse

The spoiler card noted it was labryinth inspired but I saw more of Harry Potter, the owl looking like Hedwig. It was cool but nothing I would use, so I sold it.

Pillow Case

I enjoyed Hocus Pocus a lot as a child but I am not huge into collecting items from the film. It was a satin pillowcase and felt nice but I would never use it. I sold this as well.

Post Cards

These are nothing special, nothing I couldn’t pick up myself while at walmart. I did keep them only because I could use them to write notes to those I sold or traded items to.

Book

I was actually looking forward to this book, so it was a nice find. The exclusive inside dustjacket design was unqie and I did enjoy that aspect. I kept the book.

Fantastical Reads

This box did come a little later, November 7th to be exact. The reason was they had to adjust it because of shipping restrictions. This box contained two books and the design of the overall box was very appealing, although slightly damaged in the mail. Now…I fell in love with this box. It was stuffed with amazing items and I was very impressed. The box itself was very cool, I really like the design on the outside. Everything was nicely packaged and appealing while opening. This box is $37, not including shipping, but I feel the items included and the two books were well worth the price.

Grim Reaper Print

This was super cute! I actually have it sitting on my bookshelve now, on dysplay. I love little custom made items such as this.

Mayan Spicy Hot Chocolate

I have still not tried this. It was a surprisingly large sized bag and I do intend on trying it at least once. Having a food type item in the box was unexpected but really enjoyable.

Beard & Lady Lip Balm

This was Chocolate and Cardamon scented and not too bad. I loved the design on it, super cute! I am a sucker for chapstick, I am guilty of having them all over. One in my coat, purse, room, living room, car…you get the point.

Arrow Lip Balm Holder

This had to have been one of my favorite items I have ever gotten in a book box. It was really cute and useful in my everyday life.

Travel Journal

Well, they had me there! I might have a slight problem with buying cute journals. This one was a nice neutral gray color and will be put to good use! I think I’ll make it my story idea journal.

Raven Feather Bookmark

Too Cute! I fell in love with this one right away. I recently discovered this style of bookmark and now want to endevour in making my own. I really love feathers as well.

Hugo Cabret Cogs Bookmark

Again, another super cute bookmark that will be used!

Hunger Games Placemat

I am a hunger games fan, I mean…Katniss is my celebrity look-a-like, I have been her for Halloween for about 4 years now. I think I should change it up huh? Anyway, this is such a cool placemat. It has a blue tye-dye look but it is actually nightlock stains! I am keeping it but not using it to eat on!

Outlander Apothecary Jar

I have not read that book so I am not sure how to associate this, but it is functional. I might be selling it but as of right now, it sits on my bookshelf. I might use it to put some smaller instagram photo props in, when I buy some. P.S. If anyone has tips for props, let me know!

Deck of playing cards

Now, this was noting special, but my older son likes to play go fish, so now we have a back up set…so they are functional.

Books

This is the second copy of Grim Lovlies so I am selling or trading one. Blanco & Roja, I am going to give a shot. It currently sits on my shelf with the many, many books that must be read. I really need more reading time in the day.

Spearcraft

This box was cute but the items within seemed a little cheap. I was a little dissapointed with the items, imagining I would have gotten more for my money. I felt like this box was a little thrown together rather than well though out and planned for. It arrived in a timely manner but was not packaged as neatly as the others I had received. This box costs $29.99 without shipping but they not longer offer a monthly subscription. They have now moved to a quartely box which is $55. For the items in this box, I would not purchase it again unless I was sure there was some of better quality next time. The book and Niffler are the only two great items from this box, in my opinion.

Niffler Keychain Funko

This has to be the best part of the entire box. I love the Niffler from the movie and how adorable is he?! He might become a character in some book photos…who knows.

Magical Creatures Microfiber Towel

This was alright but it seemed to girlish, like for a little girl. I will not be using this. I am hoping to trade or get rid of it.

Book Dragon Sticker

I did like this sticker, I have it with some other stickers I recently obtained. Afterall, we would rather be caleld book dragons than book worms right?

Mermaid Soap

As you know, I am writing a mermaid fantasy novel so mermaid things are great! The soap was super cute but the label was on crooked, hanging off the soap itself. It looked as if there was not quality check before packaging. I will be putting this in my stash for a mermaid giveaway in the future.

Spearcraft Book Box 1st Anniversary Candle

This was super tiny, but look at how cute that name is! I like that it has popular books from the year on the label. It does smell really good but I am not sure I will ever use this one.

Harry Potter Book Dragon Society Pin

I love this quote by Ron! As a Harry Potter fan, this was a nice touch.

Unicorn Notebook and Pencil

Again, this seemed as if meant for a little girl, a child. I will be giving this away.

Book

Empress of All Seasons was a book high on my wish list! I was so excited to find it in here. By the description I knew it was that or Shadow of the Fox. It also came with a signed bookplate and letter from the author! Emiko is awesome so this was a wonderful surprise. I do already own a copy so I will be selling or trading a copy.

Fae Crate (Specialty Box)

ordered the Queen of Air and Darkness Recovery box, you all know I am a huge Shadowhunter fan! If not…now you do! I absolutely loved this box. The box was beautiful in and of itself, almost bursting with items. I was upset my mail person left it out in the rain and the box was a little waterlogged. Thank goodness no items were damaged. Since this is a Recovery kit, sepcial edition box, it costs more than their monthly box option. This costs $52.99 without shipping where their monthly box costs $33.32 without a shirt or $44.43 with a shirt. The recovery kits do have more items than the normal monthly box, so keep that in mind if you purchase that one. There was one item that did not make it into the box but they are shipping it now, so that is good.

Will Herondale Plushie

Oh my goodness he is so cute! He sits on my shelf next to Cassandra Clare’s books. This was what I was looking forward to most in this box I think! He might be making some photo appearances as well, with my shadowhunter books of course!

Institute Prints

I really love these! Seeing everyone together, jsut brings back so many great memories of the series. I am keeping these along with all of my other shadowhunter items.

Jemma Pillowcase

This was alright, I am not sure I will keep it or not. I is not as soft as I would have wanted, but it is alright. I might be selling this.

Stelle USB Drive

This will come in handy, you can never have too many flash drives. And this way, I can show off my fandom.

Colorchanging Angelic Power Light

was not sure what this was initially but now…it is on my desk. I do enjoy this one, it is a larger item I did not expect to see in here. It does change colors but I simply left it as blue for the photo.

Izzy Lightwood Umbrella

YES!! Another item I can use on a regular basis! I was excited for this because my old Japanese Hello Kitty umbrella broke and I had yet to buy another cute one. I will be using this for sure. I would have a photo of it open but I took these indoors and am not opening an umbrella indoors…that is bad juju.

Shadowhunter Academy Pennant Flag

You bet this is displayed on my bookshelf. I am a proud shadowhunter fan and love to show it.

Illustrated Quote Stickers

These are really cute. I am keeping these as well, they will be in my sticker box.

Downworld Leather Clutch Bag

This was a unique item as well. I am not sure I will use it but not sure if I would like to sell it either. So, I am on the fence about it. I want to keep it but I am unsure if I will ever use it, I guess I’ll figure it out in the future.

Rock Solid Panda Concert Ticker Bookmark

Such a cool way to make a bookmark. The detail put into it was really nice. This is now added to my bookmark collection. You never know when you’ll need another bookmark.

Wild Hunt Candle

I enjoyed the larger size of this candle but I was not too fond of the scent. I am not sure I will burn it.

Book

Yes! This is the most exciting part of this box…look how huge it is!

Book Boyfriend Box (JEMMA)

I did receive a partial refund because there was an item or two the company failed to put int he boxes. That is poor quality control again, but their customer service team stepped up and fixed the issue. I was refunded a small amount to make up for the item that was not included. This box does not come with a book so when purchasing, keep that in mind. This box costs $50, not including shipping. That is a lot of money for a box with no book. I would have been ok with it but I had issues with a few of items. I did not feel the items were really worth the high price point. The items were packaged neatly, covered in black paper shreds.

Handmade Stele

his was probably the one item I was most looking forward to and I was dissapointed. The stele looks like a stick with clay pressed around it, I can see the fingerprints of the person who made it. I could have made this myself and probably gotten a better result. So, this was a little sad. I wish you could all see this in person.

Blackthorn Tumbler

I do like this one, although it is a smaller one, it is very cute. I have it sitting on my shelf unsure if I should sell it or not.

Angelic Rune Beanie Hat

I used to wear beanies a lot when I was younger and this was a great touch. I enjoy that I can wear this item, it is much better than a pillowcase or towl. Although, I could have also made this at home. It is only the Angelic rune ironed onto a plain black beanie.

Runes Light Switch Cover

This was simply a white light swtich cover with rune stickers on it. It looked cheaply made, I was a little disappointed in this as well.

Parabatai Oath Print

I did actually like this one. It will be something I keep with my shadowhunter books.

Runes Button

This is your standard button but with a black background and white runes covering it. I did like this.

Character Button Set

It was nice to see an entire set of buttons with chibi characters on them. I like these and will be keeping them, at least for now.

Rune Tattoos

I did like this, I would love to use them but then again I don’t want to…the struggle.

Jemma Print

Awe, I really like this one.

Julian Blackthorn Print

This one…this is nice. My husband raised his eyebrows at me when he saw it and I had to laugh a little.

Nephilim Woodmark

This is a little too think to use as a bookmark, but I like it none the less. I makes great decor.

Character Magnetic Bookmarks

These are the same characters as on the buttons. I thought they would be all magnetic but they are photo paper with a magnetic square glued on to each side.

Stickers

Aren’t these adorable!

Enchanted Book Box

This box came later than expected and had a plain box…they are in the middle of changing designs. It was packed nicely and the items were great. For the $29.99 cost, not including shipping, I think these items were worth it. I really liked that tis box.

Hogwarts Wooden Light

I absolutly love this! I had to asseble it but how cute is that? This is such a unique item and I will for sure be showing this off beside my Harry Potter Books.

Illyrian Training Camp Candle

I realy liked this one. Again, I prefer the 4oz size over the 1oz size, it seems like I am getting more of a value. This smells nice as well, marshmallow and camp fire.

Shadowhunter Rune Lanyard

This…this is so useful! I have VIP tickets to BookCon this year and will need a lanyard, what a better way that to show some of my favorite fandom!

Vampire Academy Quote Coaster

I never read that book series or watched the show, it just never really pulled me in. I do love how cute the coaster is though.

House of Night Zoey Redbird Print

OMG I love House of Night and this was fantastic! It is sitting right along with my House of Night books. I was so happy when I saw it, I knew right away what it was!

Monthly pin

This was a cute pin but I am not sure if I will be keeping it or not.

Book

The book in this box was The Disasters by M.K. England with a signed bookplate and an author letter. I was super excited about this because I participated in the blog tour and have been wanting to read this. There was also a really cute Harry Potter bookmark.

Fairyloot

I had heard fantastic things about this bookbox as well. I paid roughly $29.66 for it, not including shipping. When I saw it was dragon themed, I knew I had to get my hands on this. There were some really cool items in this and I think it was worth the price.

Reading Journal

This is a very cool item, but I made my own a while back. Though…I have not been using it. I suppose I should start. I might be selling this reading journal since I would not really use it.

Pin Flag

This was a cute burlap material but plain. It will be a nice bookstagram photo prop.

Glow in the Dark Dragon Necklace

Yes…just yes. This was really cool. I love dragons, so naturally I enjoyed most of this box. My husband is a big dragon fan as well and thought the necklace was nice.

Booksleeve

This was my first booksleeve ever. It was nice, flimsier than expected. The ones I have been practicing making have foam inside so they have more stability to them. I love that this was Harry Potter themed also! The bank scene was one of my favorite from that specific movie.

Tarot cards

Double-Sided Print

I really love this too! First we have Toothless on one side and he is the best! The other side shows Abroxos. Overall this is a very nice print.

Books

This box had two books. The first was Fire and Heist by Sarah Beth Durst. The other…an ARC of Storm Crows by Kalyn Josephson. I was beyond excited for Storm Crows! I have been looking forward to this for sooo long!!

Final Thoughts

Of course there are some pricing variations, for example the specialty boxes cost more. Some, such as the Bookboyfriend box do not come with a book but you pay more than a typical bookbox because it comes with more products. That has to play into your decision when buying a box. Are you willing to spend that much money and not get a book with it? Again, if you buy more than one box there is always the chance you might get duplicate books.

My favorite boxes were the ones where it really seemed that I got my money’s worth from the items. There were a few that I was really dissapointed in, but I guess everyone has their own opinions. The average cost for a typical book box is $29.99, from my experience. I do think that these are wonderful ideas and it is such a great surprise seeing what is in the box. I love getting mail and I am sure you all do as well.

These would be great gifts for those booklovers in your life. They are a nice prepackaged gift and with many of these you have the ability to purchase a one month or multiple month subscription. You are given hints every month about the theme and waht the book might be but it is always a surprise. Meaning, if you order multiple, you might receive duplicates of books as I did in October. The good news, the books added are always newer releases.

All in all, I think if you have the money and enjoy all the extras that come in these boxes, they would be great investments. Sometimes you might get a disapoointing box such as my Litjoy crate one, but there are so many great boxes out there. I was only able to try a few but wish I could try more for you all to see. There are a few such as Wick and Fable that have no book but are candle based. I really would love to try one of these. If there are any specific ones that you would like to see, let me know and I will try to get one so I can post my review for you.

Disclaimer: I bought all of these with my own money and these are my honest opinions.

What a great post! Out of the boxes you featured I have only ever heard of Fae Crate and Fairyloot – there are so many book boxes out there! I’ve never subscribed to a box other than Book of the Month (which I cancelled this month to save money) because I’m always afraid I’m not going to like the majority of the items in the box. ? I did win a free box from PageHabit about a year ago which was similar to the boxes here, but unfortunately the company disappeared from the face of the Earth.

There are so many more than what I’ve tried as well. I was going to try PageHabit, really liked their options but they shut their company down.
I agree it’s a you never know thing. You might love it but if not thatsv$30 you waisted. Good news is you could try to trade or sell the items.
I’m not sure I’d subscribe monthly to one though, they’re expensive.

I agree! Maybe a gift for yourself for hitting a goal or something

I am so torn about book boxes. I love the idea, but as you were showing so many of the items are disappointing. I just don’t know if I am willing to dig into my pockets for the unknown.

That’s my feeling exactly. I’d never buy them on a regular basis. Money is too valuable for that. Maybe once as a treat or something but all that money for the unknown and then being dissatisfied…not worth it many times in my opinion. Granted, sometimes there are some really great items but it is hit or miss.

Great post! I knew you were going to make this post but did not know how detailed you would get. You did a fabulous job. It really gives your followers a great view into the book box world so that they can decide for themselves.

I agree with that for the price many of the items were disappointing but I love the idea behind the boxes themselves.

I look forward to seeing any future ones you get.

I agree, I love the idea behind it as well. In the future I might try another one of these or a new box
