As some of you may know, I am a part owner and the general manager for Mystic Dragon’s Lair. That being said, I love crystals and stones. Having a science background only makes me dive deeper into the benefits and research of various stones. I always love finding new books that talk about the properties and characteristics of crystals and other minerals.
Today, I am here to talk about the Crystal Basics Pocket Encyclopedia by Nicholas Pearson. Before I begin, I have to say that Nicholas is an incredible person and I am so honored that I was given a copy of this book by Inner Traditions Publishing to review.

In this pocket reference, Nicholas Pearson offers a quick-start guide for working with crystals as well as a full-color A-to-Z compendium of the healing properties of 450 crystals, rocks, minerals, and fossils.
Covering the basics of crystal healing, Pearson explores why crystals work, how to select stones, safe and effective cleansing methods, and hands-on techniques and practices to harness the power of rocks and gems to transform your life. He also looks at how to charge crystals and program them for specific purposes, and he examines crystal correspondences with planetary, astrological, and elemental energies.
The encyclopedia of crystals includes familiar ones like agate, calcite, rose quartz, and hematite as well as rarer and more unusual crystals, such as phenakite, cavansite, and yooperlite—some of which have never before appeared in print. Each entry features a beautiful color photo of the stone and defines its physical, psychological, and spiritual healing properties and its corresponding chakra, element, planet, and zodiac sign. The author also looks at the geological nature of each stone, such as its hardness and crystal structure, enabling you to explore the connections between mineral science and the metaphysics of crystal healing.
Nicholas is probably one of my favorite authors when it comes to crystal books. He takes such care in getting to know each stone an mineral with a personal depth. My favorite part is that he incorporates the actual science. I took is crystal intensive course and loved how he included the crystal lattice structure and how the different structures gave different properties.
Enough rambling…on to the book shall we?
The first thing we see is the cover and the bright colors really do catch the eye. The bright colors are great because it is a pocket size book. I love the size of this book! I know many beginners would love to know properties while in the store looking at stones but don’t want to carry around a large book. This is the perfect alternative.
To begin the book, Nicholas discusses what a crystal is. He goes in depth about the differences between a stone, crystal, mineral, etc. The beginning of the book is actually my favorite section. After learning what a crystal is, the reader then encounters a discussion on energy. These are basic things that someone starting to work with crystals and stones needs to understand but I too often see crystal books lacking a sufficient amount of information on the subjects. The educational value does not stop there…the power of color, chakras, and even astrology are also discussed. This really is a huge educational resource packed in a small book.
The page quality is fantastic and the images are bold and clear. I was a little confused by one image. The image for crazy lace appeared to be rhodocroscite. But then again, it could be a coloring issue or maybe they are in the same family and I am not aware. Regardless, the information is clear, easy to read, and easy to comprehend.
Overall, I fell in love with this book! This is a must-have if you plan on collecting crystals or using them in your practice. For those that are beginners or who have been brought up in the crystal healing path, this is a wonderful tool to have at your disposal…and it won’t take up much space!

This books sounds really interesting, my daughter has started to collect crystals and loves learning about them. Think I might have to purchase this book.
If your daughter needs any advice or guidance, I am willing to help. I actually own a metaphysical store and can help her to learn as she continues to collect etc. Thank you for reading my review. 🙂
