Mini Review: Honoring your Ancestors – Mallorie Vaudoise

Welcome back! The week is now one more day closer to being over. Do you have plans this weekend? I think we are finally taking down our tree. I love the lights and feeling of love and giving the decorations bring. The new year brings many opportunities and I intend to take them. this year, I’ll be a little selfish…I’m going to focus on me. I am growing into who I’ve always meant to be…I’m strong and this will be my year. It is my year to shine.

So, today is not Wednesday but I’m doing a ‘witchy’ review anyway. This book is not directly about witchcraft but, our ancestors and various spirits that surround us. I guess I’ll just move on to it.

Learn how to connect to your ancestors and receive the benefits that come from veneration–deeper spirituality, more love in your life, better outcomes in creative pursuits, powerful magic and spellwork, and an improved sense of wellness. Filled with hands-on techniques and tips, Honoring Your Ancestors shows you how to create an ancestor altar so you can work with ancestors of all kinds. Author Mallorie Vaudoise also shares fascinating ideas for incorporating rituals, spells, family recipes, and even practices like music and dancing to help you open this wonderful new dimension of your spiritual journey.
Ancestor veneration is one of the most widespread spiritual practices in the world. This book shares the important distinctions between working with blood ancestors, lineage ancestors, and affinity ancestors while helping you recognize the signs that your ancestors are responding to your petitions and offerings. You will also explore important topics like mediumship and ancestral trauma so you can be sure to develop a veneration practice that’s uplifting and affirming for you.

I was really excited when this book showed up in the mail. My dad passes away when I was 17 and I’ve always wanted to try to connect with him. My entire life, I knew spirits were real and most people brushed it off. I feel those who refuse to believe are ignorant, thinking we are the only energetic beings because we are all they can see… This book goes into detail about the various types of spirits: house spirits, non-human spirits, land spirits, ghosts…the list goes on. I had begun to set up an ancestor altar around Samhain but this book really dove deeper into the little things. It presents a ritual to consecrate a new ancestor altar.

This book is incredibly full of information. I really enjoy how each chapter has some journal prompts at the end. I think it is really important to write down notes as we learn and these questions are great ways to do that. This book has so many details; everything from floor washing to spiritual prayer is discussed. Using a deck of cards to determine if you should leave an offering…there are so many useful things hidden between the pages of this novel. It even has a section of herbs! This is for sure going to be a well-used book. I’ve already begun adding post-it notes on certain pages to remind myself to read more information about certain topics such as the herbs.

This was not a book I requested but it is one I’ll always cherish. It holds a special place because in my heart. Often we forget about our ancestors and that they still should remain a part of our lives. We need to remember we wouldn’t be where we are without the acts of our ancestors. Honoring them is the least we can do.

What do you think? What do you do honor your ancestors?
