It’s Zoey’s eighteenth birthmas and the Nerd Herd has been scattered across the country busily adulting for almost a year when Stark calls them back to Tulsa to surprise Z. But all is not well in T-town. Strange, dark signs are appearing—could it be possible Neferet is stirring? Not willing to chance disaster striking again, Zoey calls on her newly reunited friends to circle with her and add a layer of protection over Neferet’s grotto jail. Easy-peasy, right?

Wrong. Nothing at the House of Night is ever as it seems.

With rabid red vampyres closing in, Zoey and the Nerd Herd must come together again and battle evil. But a year is a long time. Have these old friends grown too far apart?

When the world fractures and allies become enemies, will darkness devour friendships or will light save those she’s loved?

This book once again proves that the nerd heard is stronger when they are all together. I have loved this series from when I began reading the first House of Night book. Like others, I moved through this book quickly…craving more. This is an easy read with characters many are comfortable with by now.

There were a couple things that I found displeasing.  Aphrodite’s mother seemed to be spreading an underlying message that tied in with current political topics, well political topics now and those from the previous election. It was abundantly clear that she was meant to represent Trump in a ridiculous way. The lettering on Zoey’s jacket was also pointed out…feminism. I am not a feminist and do not judge those that are, there are many branches of feminism and some just seem to ride on blatant disrespect. It is very clear both authors are liberal feminists, but this book is not the place to push a political agenda. or is it? It is their novel after all and this is only my opinion.  I simply do not like this type of propaganda from either side of the spectrum. I am all for speaking your mind, but adding very controversial topics into fantasy novels can be a tough subject. If done properly, they are great. But here I found them childish and petty. Aphrodite’s mother was a great character, but the novel could have done without the political tie-in, it was distasteful. With that aside, I loved the book.

Though this specific danger does not come from where they expect it, something else stirs in the darkness. Loved ends with such a great cliffhanger, as expected from these two amazing authors. I look forward to reading the next book, Lost.
