Adair Finch is the most powerful warlock in the world, and one of the best private investigators for hire. He has dealt with corporate vampires, murderous werewolves, and even fae royalty. Everything was perfect until he lost one case—the case where he also lost his brother.

So Finch retired. From magic. From PI work. From everything.

Bree Blackstone, a twelve-year-old witch, doesn’t know or care about any of that except Finch’s reputation. In the middle of the night, she bangs on Finch’s door. Her mother has been murdered, and now the assassin is after Bree as well.

Reluctantly, Finch agrees to help, only to discover something sinister has been brewing in town while he ignored the world… He’ll need to dust off all his old skills and magic before it’s too late.

It has been a long while since I read an urban fantasy that really pulled me in. This did it! I really loved this book but I will say that Bree got on my nerves some in the beginning. I thought she was a teen, but after the first introduction, she really acts more like an 8-year-old. Her whining just really got to me, but…by the end of the book, I thought she had matured some. I understand some of her panic; my dad passed in front of me when I was 17, and my mom did not live in the state. It was traumatic but I would not have acted as childish as she did. Oh…an I want some of that tea.

There was not much worldbuilding that needed to be done considering it was a modern urban fantasy. They even mention TikTok at some point. This book moved pretty quickly for me and held my attention throughout. As the story progressed, at one point you could tell that he was getting frustrated with having to attempt to save everyone. After a few times he was simply moving through the motions.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was a refreshing change from the romantasy that I have been reading lately. If you are looking for a book that plays like a movie as you read it and lacks romance absolutely pick this one up and give it a chance.

Meet the Author

Shami Stovall is a multi-award-winning author of fantasy and science fiction. Before that, she taught history and criminal law at the college level, and loved every second. When she’s not reading fascinating articles and books about ancient China or the Byzantine Empire, Stovall can be found playing way too many video games, especially RPGs and tactics simulators.
